Director of Product Research
The Director of Product Research is a senior leadership role responsible for driving the strategic direction of product research initiatives to ensure that product development is guided by data, user insights, and market trends. This role involves overseeing user research, market analysis, competitive intelligence, and ensuring that research findings are effectively translated into actionable product strategies. The Director of Product Research will work closely with product managers, designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure that product decisions are informed, innovative, and aligned with business objectives.
Tasks:
- Develop and lead research strategy: Define and implement a comprehensive product research strategy that supports the company’s product vision and goals, aligning research efforts with key business objectives.
- User research: Oversee and conduct user research (e.g., user interviews, surveys, usability testing) to gather insights on user needs, pain points, and behaviors. Translate these insights into actionable recommendations for the product team.
- Market and competitive analysis: Lead efforts to understand market trends, customer needs, and competitive landscapes through research and data analysis. Identify gaps and opportunities for new product features or innovations.
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams: Work closely with product managers, UX designers, engineers, and marketing teams to ensure that research insights are integrated into the product development process and drive informed decision-making.
- Data analysis and reporting: Analyze quantitative and qualitative research data, providing clear and actionable reports, presentations, and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Mentorship and team management: Lead and mentor a team of product researchers, ensuring they have the resources and support to deliver high-quality research and grow in their careers.
- Establish research methodologies: Define and implement best practices and methodologies for product research to ensure consistency, validity, and reliability of findings across research projects.
- Innovation and improvement: Keep up-to-date with the latest trends in product research, market research, and user experience, and introduce new methods or tools to continuously improve research processes.
- Research advocacy: Advocate for research across the organization, ensuring that data-driven decision-making is prioritized and that all stakeholders understand the value of research insights.
- Measure research impact: Track the impact of research efforts on product development and business outcomes, ensuring that research efforts are delivering measurable value to the organization.
- Budget and resource management: Manage the research budget and resources, ensuring efficient allocation of research efforts to meet product development goals.
Requirements:
- Experience: 8+ years of experience in product research, with at least 3 years in a leadership role managing teams and overseeing product research initiatives.
- Education: A degree in Product Design, Market Research, Behavioral Science, Psychology, Business, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in research methodologies are a plus.
- Research expertise: Strong expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including user interviews, surveys, ethnographic research, usability testing, A/B testing, and market analysis.
- Product and market knowledge: Deep understanding of product development processes, market trends, and the ability to translate research findings into actionable insights for product teams.
- Leadership skills: Proven ability to lead, manage, and mentor a team of product researchers, providing guidance and fostering a collaborative environment.
- Analytical skills: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex research data into clear, actionable insights for cross-functional teams.
- Collaboration and communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present research findings to diverse stakeholders, including executives, product managers, engineers, and designers.
- Project management: Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple research projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- User-centered mindset: A passion for understanding users and a user-centered approach to product development, ensuring that research is always aligned with the needs and preferences of end users.
- Problem-solving: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with the capability to guide teams through complex research challenges.
- Tech-savvy: Familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., SPSS, R, Python) and research software (e.g., UserTesting, Optimal Workshop, Qualtrics) is preferred.
